“Music is to the soul what words are to the mind.” Modest Mouse.

Music, or as the Italians say, Musica, is really pleasant to the soul. The love and joy one feels when listening one's favourite song is a force need not be reckoned with.
But music can do much more. Yes, you heard me right. Music can be used to heal, it can be used to improve your mood, music lessens your anxiety and eases pain. Music is worth more than a pitch or rhythm. Music is life; Music is our life.
I would go on and on talking about the benefits of music but time waits for no one.
Today, I am going to talk about one aspect of music:

Productivity.

Study does show how music improves our productivity but it's important you choose the right music for the right job. Let me explain:
  • Lyrics tend to distract you when reading or writing. So, go for instrumental music when reading and/or writing.
  • Want to be motivated? Listen to your favourite song.
Rules for getting the perfect playlist:
1. Have nature by your side.
The The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America made a study based on the office environment in which they proved that natural sounds help in speech privacy, and enhance the cognitive functioning and ability to concentrate.

2. Favourite Song, not a song you dislike.
Can you imagine listening to a song you don't like? It would'nt be much of a pleasure, would it?
Dr. Teresa Lesiuk, a professor at the University of Miami, found out that the music that people enjoy increases one's productivity much better than music that people dislike.
She stated that when you are in a positive mood, you are able to take in more options.

3. Songs without lyrics.
While trying to mask a conversation with music, lyrics can be very distracting.
Most workers would then shift their attention from work to the words in the song which would not at all increase their productivity.

4. Your environment's speed.
Imagine listening to a slow pace music while doing a fast-paced job. Your productivity will be slowed down because of the music you are listening to.
This follows then that the music you listen to should depend on the pace of your work for increased productivity.
In a gym? Listen to fast music.
Want to relieve your stress? Try larghetto beat.
Feel energized? Try uptempo or baroque music.
I recommend finding your focus music here.

5. Noise level matters!
Researchers showed that music played at a moderate level encourages creativity and abstract thinking.
The music should be loud enough to mask your surroundings. High noise levels decrease the processing ability of your brain. So strive for moderate levels of music.
