Coronavirus

The new Coronavirus or COVID-19 is believed to have originated from Wuhan, China in December 2019. The virus that causes COVID-19 is called SARS - COV -2. This virus spreads from human to human. At the moment, there isn't enough information to determine how fast it spreads.

There are over 24.5 million cases worldwide and 832 thousand deaths are reported as of now. COVID-19 seems to be passed down from small respiratory droplets passed through sneezing, coughing, or when people interact with each other in a small proximity. These droplets can be inhaled. Or sometimes it can land on surfaces where others can get in contact with. The virus can last on surfaces for days. The infectious period is about seven to twelve days in moderate cases and about two weeks in very severe cases. Covid-19 affects different people in different ways. Some experience mild symptoms and recover without the need for hospitalization. Data shows that approximately 20% to 30% of COVID-19 patients are hospitalized and 4% have a severe illness. Hospitalization rates are higher for those aged 60 years and above and those who have underlying medical conditions.
The symptoms of this disease include:
  • Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Dry cough
  • Aches and Pains
  • Sore throat
  • Diarrhea
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Rash on skin
  • Discoloration of fingers or toes
There are simple precautions the World Health Organization advises us to follow so that we can protect ourselves from this deadly Coronavirus:
  1. Use alcohol-based sanitizers or soap and water to wash your hands. We should wash our hands thoroughly. We should only apply a coin amount of the soap or sanitizers as there is no need to use a large amount of the product. We should not cook after using the sanitizers as they are flammable.
  2. Avoid shaking hands. Instead nod or bow.
  3. When coughing or sneezing cover your nose and mouth using a flexed elbow or a disposable tissue. Immediately afterward, dispose of the tissue well in a bin.
  4. Wearing rubber gloves in public is not as effective as washing your hands.
  5. If you experience any COVID-19 symptoms seek medical attention.
  6. Avoid crowded areas.
  7. STAY AT HOME!!!!!!
  8. Don't spread myths or misconceptions on social media. Doing this will keep you and others safe.
  9. Clean your house and surroundings regularly.
Corona-virus cannot be cured. Treatments are under investigation and will be passed through clinical trials. 172 countries of the world are helping in the finding of a vaccine for this deadly disease. So, how can we make use of our time during this coronavirus period? During this coronavirus period, we should strive to exercise to keep fit. Most of us do not go to work or school and find ourselves bored at home. Find something to do and practice doing it. Remember, Coronavirus may be a blessing in disguise.
